Scapicchio’s Bakery, owned by Matthew Scapicchio and his family, represents not just the culmination of years of experience and hard work but also a beacon of community and familial warmth. Matthew’s journey in the baking world began at the tender age of 16 in 1980, when he first dipped his hands into the art of Italian bread making.
The Beginnings
Matthew’s formative years in baking were spent under the wing of a venerable North End baker, a craftsman who not only mentored him in the traditional Italian baking arts but also had the honor of making his parents’ wedding cake. This profound connection to his roots and the craftsmanship of baking propelled him through a decade of refining his skills at La Contessa Pastry shop in Somerville, supplementing his experience with time at La Cascia’s Bakery in Medford.
Yet, despite his growing expertise and reputation, Matthew took a significant hiatus from baking, stepping away from the ovens for 25 years before the flame of passion called him back.
The opening of his own bakery in South Yarmouth was not merely a return to a profession but the beginning of a new chapter in Matthew’s life. More than just realizing a personal dream, it was about crafting a legacy and bringing something unique to the Cape Cod community. This wasn’t going to be just any bakery; Matthew envisioned a place that felt like home, where customers weren’t just transactions but part of an extended family. And at the heart of this vision was his own family’s unwavering support and involvement in the business.
The Community
Debbie, Matthew’s wife, alongside their daughter Angela, took the helm at the counter, providing the friendly faces that welcomed everyone who walked through the door. Their son Domenic embraced the role of customer greeter and doorman, adding a personal touch that has helped make the bakery a neighborhood staple.
Together, they’ve created more than just a business—they’ve cultivated a true family-style bakery that embodies the essence of community. Residents and visitors to Cape Cod are not just invited to enjoy the delectable breads and pastries but to become part of a story that celebrates family, tradition, and the joy of baking.
